Counseling Program

Students will participate in guidance lessons facilitated by the school counselor. The purpose of these lessons are to enhance and reinforce The Hippo Way, and Conscious Discipline objectives. Guidance is designed to help all students develop their full educational potential. Lessons will be scheduled with the classroom teacher, and can be customized to a particular classroom’s needs.

Small Group Counseling

Small group counseling, often referred to as “Lunch Bunch”, occurs during a students lunch or recess time. The purpose of these groups is to develop and enhance social skills, emotion management, positive relationships, and learning strategies. Where possible topic related groups will be created to address special circumstances, such as grief, divorce, or a recent move.

Individual Counseling

Short-term individual counseling is available to students at the request of parents/guardians, students and teachers. This is designed to meet the needs of all students expressing difficulties dealing with academic achievement, personal concerns or other challenges. If more extensive counseling is needed, a referral will be made.

Parents and teachers may want to collaborate on emotional or goal setting strategies that might make their student’s school day more productive. This can be done via phone, email, appointment, or drop in when available. Solutions are often better achieved in collaboration.

Check in/out

Some students thrive when they “check in” each day. This may include a behavior chart/contract, or an informal conversation. Students meet in the morning and afternoon to discuss their day. Sometimes they might meet midday. The goal is to help the student regulate their emotions so that they might be more successful in class.

The NJES a mentoring program matches students to mentors. Each mentor that is recruited is screened to insure that they meet our volunteer regulations and would be a good fit for their mentee. Once matches, mentors and mentees meet weekly. Teachers or parents may request a referral packet for their student.
